Children Helping Children
(2006-2008)
At the December 2007 JWCB meeting, Carol Kovichic spoke to club members about her Sunday school students who adopted a little girl from Uganda through the Christian Relief Fund program.
Both of the little girl's parents had died from HIV/AIDS, and she was living with her grandmother and 7 other relatives. Their total income was less than $4.00 a month. Ms. Kovichic explained that CRF has helped over 4,000 children in 28 countries during the previous year. She shared letters from the little girl and newsletters from the Christian Chronicle.
The Sunday school class pledged $25.00 a month to help with food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and some school supplies. Ms. Kovichic described the change in her students as a result of giving to others less fortunate through their support of this little girl, indicating that our club, or individual members, could make a difference. Pamphlets were handed to everyone present.
Ms. Kovichic's class planned for the next year to sponsor another CRF program called "putting a Face on the Lost Generation" in sub-Saharan Africa, where there are more than 34 million orphans, 11 milion of them orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The burden of caring for the orphans falls on a single parent or on already over-stretched families. Such is the case for most of the children, who survive on a diet of corn mail cooked in water, some vegetables, rice, and sometimes fish.
Ms. Kovichic's commitment to help her students look past their own personal passions was inspiring to our club members.
